
Schools across Richmondshire are closed today after heavy snowfalls overnight.
Police are urging motorists to only travel if necessary after several inches fell on the district, with further snowfalls forecast today.
The A66 remains shut between Bowes and Brough this morning with reports of blizzard conditions and drifting snow on the tops.
The schools which have announced their closure include:
- Askrigg Primary School
- Bainbridge Primary School
- Cambrai Primary School
- Hawes Primary School
- Hipswell Primary School
- Le Cateau Community Primary School
- Leyburn Primary School
- Michael Syddall Primary School
- Middleham Primary School
- Reeth and Gunnerside Primary Schools
- Risedale School
- Richmond School and Sixth Form
- Spennithorne Primary School
- The Wensleydale School
- Trinity Academy Eppleby Forcett and Middleton Tyas.
- Trinity Academy Richmond
- Wavell Infant and Nursery School
- Wavell Junior School
- West Burton Primary School
St Francis Xavier School says it is open for all who are able to safely attend, although several bus services to the school are not running.
Police have urged motorists to only drive if necessary.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said last night: “Our control room are receiving a lot of calls about stranded vehicles so please avoid travelling if possible.
“If you absolutely must drive, plan your trip before setting off, allow extra time and check for road closures too.
“Please dress and pack appropriately.”
Announcing their decision to close, a spokesperson for Richmond School said: “Due to the large number of students relying on bus travel, staff living outside Richmond and a large site that cannot be made safe in good time, we have made the decision to close school today.
“Students will be set work on Google Classroom.”
Other closures because of the weather include the Post Office in Finkle Street, Richmond, with staff being advised not to make the journey from Darlington.
Leyburn Auction Mart has also cancelled its sale today, while Richmondshire District Council has cancelled waste collections in a number of areas.
