Schools remain closed as temperatures plummet after snow

Schools across Richmondshire remained shut on Friday after a night of plummeting temperatures followed a day of heavy snow.

Temperature of as low as -8C were recorded in the district on Friday morning.

A Met Office yellow weather warning remains in place until 9pm today.

Numerous schools across the district have stayed show due to the conditions.

Schools which have remained closed include:

  • Carnagill
  • Michael Syddall
  • Wavell infant and Juniors
  • The Wensleydale School
  • Leyburn Primary
  • Trinity Academy Richmond
  • Trinity Academy Eppleby Forcett and Middleton Tyas
  • Barton
  • Colburn
  • Ravensworth
  • Reeth and Gunnerside
  • Richmond Methodist
  • St Mary’s
  • Bainbridge
  • Askrigg
  • West Burton

Richmond School will remain open for the children of keyworkers.

The district’s main roads are clear of snow but motorists have been urged to take care and only go out if necessary.

Forecasters say temperatures will stay at zero or below today, and plummet again tonight.

Sleet and snow is then forecast on Saturday, when a further weather warning for both snow and ice will be in place.
