Search on to find Richmond MayFest queen and king

The Ran Tanners lead the parade in 2023.

The search is on for a Richmond MayFest queen and king and their assistants to lead the parade at this year’s MayFest.

Children in the town are being invited to dress up and join the fun for the festival which features four days of music, dance, storytelling and fun!

Children aged from five to 16 are invited to dress in their finest as queen, king, jack-in-the-green, royal jester, page, flower girl or other member of the royal court.

Families can make their costumes at home or join the MayFest Makers at Richmondshire Museum.

Chris and Wendy will be there from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5.

All are welcome, but organisers say youngsters need to bring an adult.

Admission is free for all local residents.

The next day, participants register at Richmond Town Hall from 10.30am ready to join the procession wearing their costumes.

At 11am, the parade will set off from the Town Hall to Richmond Castle, led by the Newton Aycliffe Pipe Band – and the inimitable Tom Fool.

Competition winners will be announced at the Castle at 12noon.

Organisers say this year’s MayFest programme has a host of performers and for children as well as the crafts and parade there is maypole dancing, Punch and Judy; the Silly History Boys, Dawn of Chivalry living history group, circus skills, facepainting and Tom Fool.

There are also markets with craft and plant stalls, including Richmond Saturday Market, from 8am to 3pm; plant sale and crafts on Sunday from 9am to 4pm and food, drinks and craft market from 9am to 3pm on Monday.

All events taking place in Richmond Castle are free for residents in DL9, DL10 and DL11 courtesy of English Heritage and there is free music and dance around the town, including the MayFest Mini Folk Fest on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in the Town Hall.

There are four ticketed musical events and these are now on sale, with a reduction for local residents in the above postcode areas. Accompanied under-18s go free.
