Local policing Inspector Mark Gee, said: “We are extremely concerned for Mr Harvey’s welfare. Despite being an experienced walker, Harry has been missing for a long time now, in wet conditions and cold wind.

“We are appealing for residents and workers in the area to check outbuildings, sheds and barns, as he may have taken shelter in there.

“Harry was carrying all of his camping equipment with him, so we are also appealing to anyone who has seen a discarded tent or hiking gear to get in touch.”

A police spokesperson said: “Mr Harvey had been walking when he disappeared, possibly after getting lost en-route.

“Despite being a competent hiker we are concerned for his welfare.”

Police are urging farmers, game keepers and others who work in the rural Richmondshire area around Keld, Muker and Gunnerside to help the search by checking outbuildings and sheltered areas.
