The Met Office yellow warning for snow on Sunday across much of the North of England – including Richmondshire – has been upgraded to an amber warning.
A severe weather warning has also been issued by Highways England with drivers being urged to be prepared before setting out on journeys this weekend.
An amber warning for snow will be in place for the region between 3am and 6pm in response to a forecast of frequent snow showers.
Accumulations of 4cm to 8cms on lowlands and 10cm to 15cm on higher routes is forecast.
Phil Stockford, emergency planning manager at Highways England, said: “Gritters are out treating our routes around the clock, but it is still important to drive to the conditions when snow is forecast.
“Keep your distance and reduce your speed, because even in conditions that seem normal, and the snow is not settling, it can be slippery if ice patches have formed, or where fresh grit has not been worked into the carriageway.
“Drivers should plan their journeys, monitor weather reports and pack a snow kit of blankets, food, water and a shovel.”
