More than 70 pupils at Saint Francis Xavier School are preparing to take audiences on a magical adventure when they perform Chitty Chitty Bang Bang JR.
The production will be staged over three evenings from Monday, July 13 to Wednesday, July 15, with performances beginning at 7pm.
Based on Ian Fleming’s much-loved children’s book and the classic family film, the 60-minute musical follows inventor Caractacus Potts as he restores an old racing car that turns out to have magical powers.
As the adventure unfolds, Potts and his family must outwit the villainous Baron Bomburst, the Baroness and the sinister Child Catcher, who are determined to get their hands on the extraordinary vehicle.
The junior version of the musical features a book by Jeremy Sams and music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, the songwriting brothers behind Mary Poppins. It also includes the Academy Award-nominated title song from the 1968 film adaptation.
The school production features a cast of more than 70 pupils aged between 11 and 16.
It is directed by Curriculum Lead for Performing Arts, Miss Smith, with choreography by dance teacher Ms Knight and musical direction from Mr Bearpark.
Miss Smith praised the commitment shown by the cast during rehearsals.
She said: “The cast are working really well and we have lots of surprises for our audience, with the car playing such a key role in the show.
“We are really proud of everyone’s efforts in piecing the show together and we look forward to sharing it with our audiences.”
The production marks the latest opportunity for pupils to showcase their talents in acting, singing and dancing, with staff promising plenty of memorable moments as the magical car takes centre stage.
