A soldier is due to face trial on an attempted murder charge following an incident in which a man suffered critical injuries.

Steffan Rhys Wilson, 25, who was based at Catterick Garrison, appeared at Leeds Crown Court via video link today but did not enter a plea to the charge.

It follows an incident at Little Holtby, between Leeming and Catterick Village, in the early hours of December 1 in which a 43-year-old man was taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries.

Wilson, from Llanybydder, West Wales, is also accused of assaulting two police officers on the same date.

The defendant is yet to enter pleas to any of the charges.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC set a provisional trial date of May 18.

The trial is expected to last three days.

There will be a further case management hearing on February 3, when Wilson could enter pleas to the allegations.
