Families across Richmondshire are invited to join in the Summer Reading Challenge, running now at libraries in Richmond, Catterick, and Colburn.
Aimed at children aged 4 to 11, the challenge is free and designed to keep young minds active and engaged over the summer break.
Alongside the reading challenge, each library is hosting a range of free events and hands-on activities, from animal encounters and craft sessions to storytimes with a local author-and even pony rides.
“It’s a fantastic way for children to stay curious and creative during the holidays,” said Jo Partington, CRACCL’s admin manager.
“And it’s all completely free! We’d love to see more families get involved.”

Special Author Event – Little Loco’s BIG Day with Caroline Hardie:
Join local author and archaeologist Caroline Hardie for a unique story time and history experience! Caroline will read from her children’s book, ‘Little Loco’s BIG Day’ – a delightful story about a small steam engine on one very big day: the beginning of the modern railway, 200 years ago. Children will learn how archaeologists use real clues to find out about what really happened on this world changing day. Then we will think about how travelling by train has changed in the last 200 years and explore how train travel has changed over two centuries. It’s interactive, educational, and perfect for curious young minds aged 4-7, although younger and older children are also welcome. Don’t miss this free, hands-on event where history comes to life!
Richmond Library – 18th August @ 10:30-11:30am
Catterick Library – 20th August @ 2:00-3:00pm
Children can sign up at their local library for any of these events and to join the SRC challenge. The more they read, the more rewards they earn – and they’ll also get the chance to discover new authors, take part in themed activities, and celebrate their achievements.
For more information, visit your local library or check updates online (craccl.org). Don’t miss out – make reading part of your summer adventure.
