Swaledale country house approved as civil wedding venue

A Swaledale country house has become the first non-religious wedding venue in the dale.

Hazel Brow House, in Low Row, has been approved as one of North Yorkshire’s newest wedding venues.

The owners say the property features large rooms, open fires, amazing views and a maize of walks from the front door.

The award-winning venue can host wedding ceremonies and receptions for up to 50 guests.

It also offers facilities for corporate events and celebrations with five star self-catering accommodation for up 15 guests.

Sir Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “Hazel Brow House is a stunning venue with magnificent views over the Swaledale countryside – so it makes a fantastic wedding location.

“Yorkshire has an incredible variety of beautiful wedding venues with something to suit everyone’s taste, offering even more reasons for people to come to the county and boost our economy.”

The house is owned by the Calvert family.

Major investment in the property in 2014 resulted in Hazel Brow House being shortlisted for the 2015 White Rose Awards.

Ruth Calvert, a fourth generation family member, joined the family business earlier this year.

She says demand from guests fuelled the recent expansion and addition of diversified services.

She added: “We’ve thoroughly enjoyed welcoming guests from Costa Rica to Finland, Australia to Canada and the US as well as people from counties across the UK.

“It’s great to be able to host visitors from such a global customer base and for such diverse events.”

Working with local partners, Hazel Brow Farm Holidays and Hazel Brow Events can offer a huge range of activities, experiences and services from spa treatments to sheep racing or murder mysteries or relaxing breaks to walking or cycling holidays.

Support from the Small Business Grant Scheme at the district council for a new website and advice through York, North Yorkshire and East Riding enterprise partnership helped with the recent developments.
