Two young leaders from the Swaledale Scouts are heading to the US next year to take part in the 24th World Scout Jamboree.

15-year-old Harriet Rye and 14-year -old Sacha Cole, who both live in Reeth, are two of only three Scouts from Richmondshire chosen to attend the event in West Virginia in the summer of 2019.

They were chosen following a written application, then a weekend selection camp held last November.

World Jamborees are held every four years in different parts of the world and a total of five thousand Scouts will be going from the UK.

Harriet and Sacha are part of Unit 33 Yorkham, which is comprises delegates from North Yorkshire and County Durham.

They are currently hard at work raising the £3,700 each it will cost for this experience of a life time; part of this fee goes towards funding Scouts from the developing world to attend, to make it a truly World Scout Jamboree.

They began their fund raising by running the barbecue at Reeth New Year’s Day fireworks display and are doing a sponsored abseil off the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge in May.
