The Club in Hawes reopens after refit

Mary Sumner declares Hawes Club open.

Hawes Club’s longest member has declared the venue open after a major refit.

Mary Sumner, 96, who has been a member for more than 40 years, did the honours ahead of the reopening on Friday evening, joking that the work had been paid for by her gin habit.

The Club has been closed for the last four weeks while the work has been completed.

As well as new carpets and upholstery, a new bar and lighting has been fitted.

Chair of the committee Sheila Alderson said the club was on the up, with almost 200 members, including younger drinkers.

She added: “It’s great to be back open again and everyone is now welcome to come and see for themselves the improvements.”

The club has domino teams, a ladies darts team, bingo, holds regular quizzes and raises money for local good causes.

It also shows live football on Sky.

Mary joked that the work had been paid for by her gin purchases.

Members hip is £5.50 for the year. Visitors can get temporary membership for £1.
