Thieves take car in Hawes after stealing keys from owner’s house

A car was stolen in Hawes at the weekend after the thieves took the keys from the owner’s house in a so-called 2-in-1 burglary.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information about the incident at a property near Gayle Lane where a light blue Audi RS3 was stolen from the homeowners driveway.

The homeowner was woken by the sound of their Audi RS3 being driven away at around 1.30am on Saturday, July 17.

Thieves had gained entrance to the house by a side door and stolen the car keys.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Officers are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the burglary, who may have seen the vehicle as it left the Hawes area, to contact them.

“They also want to hear from anyone who may have noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area in the days prior to the burglary.”

Anyone who has any information which would assist the investigation is asked to dial 101, select option 2 and ask to speak to Detective Constable Quita Passmore.

A 2-in-1 burglary is where a criminal will break into your home with the specific aim of taking your car keys and stealing your car from your driveway.

There are some steps you can take to make it more difficult for thieves to target your home and vehicle, such as:

  • installing CCTV to cover your property and driveway
  • fitting security lights to your property
  • using your garage if you have one or if not – considering fitting lockable gates or a security post to your driveway

You could also consider fitting a tracker or immobiliser to your vehicle and always make sure your car doors, windows, boot and sunroof are locked and secure. Similarly with your home – always ensure windows and doors are locked and don’t leave any keys on show.
