A night of top-class comedy is coming to upper Wensleydale in June following previous sell-out performances in Hawes and Askrigg.

Comedy in the Dales is becoming a regular feature of the rural calendar and the next evening of stand-up will be on Friday, June 14, at The Falls on Church Bank in Aysgarth, hosted by international funny-man, Bill Woolland.

Headliner is the multi-award winning Steve Shanyaski, with Nina Gilligan and Anthony J Brown, all popular comics on the international club circuit.

The rural venues may be remote for comedians more used to playing to city pubs and theatres, but the warmth and intimacy of small town settings are proving popular with audiences and entertainers alike.

The first comedy evening last summer in the Market House, Hawes – more familiar as a venue for pantomimes and Hoppers’ auctions – was something of a gamble for organiser Tippy Watson of Askrigg.

The second event was just over a month ago in the Yorkshire Dales Brewery’s new Abbey Works premises in Askrigg. It, too, was a sell-out and the unconventional setting itself proved a rich source of gentle humour for compere Jamie Sutherland.

“I simply had no idea how such shows would play in a rural setting,” said Tippy, who with partner, Simon, runs the international events company, Incredible Artists.

“In fact we sold out within a very short time which is why we’re planning a third event in so soon after the last one.”

This time the venue is more capacious: The Falls, once a popular venue for Friday nights out in the Dales, has been completely refurbished under new owners Liz and Matt Tooley, to provide a 200-seater events space, café and arts and crafts centre.

There will be a raffle to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care, which benefits from every gig organised by Dales Events. The total so far raised stands at £55,000 in under two years. Coaches for the comedy evening will run from Leyburn (via Wensley and Redmire) and Hawes, (via Bainbridge, Askrigg and Carperby) for £5 return.

Tickets are available online or from Sykes Shop, Askrigg or The Falls. If you are driving, your ticket includes free parking.

Dales Events aim to put on many events throughout the year, all with an element of fundraising for Breast Cancer Care, and have already planned a laid back Jazz and Blues Sunday afternoon on June 9 at the Yorkshire Dales Brewery in Askrigg, featuring Kiki deVille (BBC 1’s “The Voice”) and an outdoor screening of Bohemian Rhapsody on June 29.

For more details of these and other events follow them on Facebook @dalesevents or tickets available on but be warned, says Tippy: “The last three events sold out in advance!”

  1. I think we need to remember there are other cancer charities who desperately need funds!
