Top-rated Georgian Theatre launches new season of historic tours

One of Richmond’s best-loved landmarks is inviting visitors to step back in time as a new season of guided tours gets under way at the Georgian Theatre Royal.

From Monday 16 February, the theatre will once again host its popular Georgian Theatre Experience, following its recent recognition as a 2025 Travellers’ Choice Award winner by Tripadvisor. The accolade places the venue in the top 10 per cent of attractions worldwide, with a 4.9-star rating from more than 530 reviews, and No.1 among things to do in Richmond.

The fully guided tours run on the hour from 10am to 3pm, Monday to Saturday, through to the end of October. In a move welcomed by visitors, ticket prices have been held for the new season.

Lasting just under an hour, the tours explore every corner of the UK’s oldest working theatre in its original form. Visitors can uncover hidden trap doors, venture into underground dressing rooms and hear colourful stories of the raucous audiences who once filled the intimate Georgian auditorium.

The experience also brings to life the people behind the theatre’s story, with a purpose-built exhibition featuring original playbills, costumes and props, alongside the beautifully restored Woodland Scene – the oldest surviving stage scenery in Britain.

Guides also chart the theatre’s dramatic 238-year journey, from its opening in 1788, through periods of closure and alternative uses as an auction house and wine cellar, to its revival as a thriving performance venue in 1963. Depending on the day, visitors may even glimpse rehearsals in progress.

Chief executive Jo Mawhinney said the new season was an opportunity to welcome both first-time and returning visitors. She praised the volunteer guides whose “passion, warmth and wealth of fascinating stories” make every tour unique.

No advance booking is required, with tours starting from the theatre’s main entrance on Victoria Road.

Tickets cost £8 for adults and £3 for children and are valid for 12 months.
