Richmond schoolchildren will see off Tour de Yorkshire riders with a sea of specially made flags.

And the overall winner of a competition to design the flags will take part in the race start and receive a replica of the official TDY flag.

Eleven-year-old Poppy Rhodes, from St Mary’s RC Primary School, Richmond, won the Richmondshire District Council competition which was judged by local artist, Lucy Pittaway.

This story continues after the adverts:

“It was an absolute pleasure to judge the flag designs for the Richmond start of the Tour and the overall standard of ideas and drawings for the age group was very high indeed,” said Lucy.

“The winning design encapsulates all the right elements, including Richmond Castle, the Yorkshire Rose and the cyclists – they have all been brought together in an nicely thought out composition with great attention to detail in the rendering.

“Well done to the winner and all the other pupils that entered.”

All the entrants to the competition will march from the start line through the town ahead of the race waving their flags.
