Toy train sells for world record £6,000 at Tennants

A Hornby Dublo Locomotive toy has sold form more than £6,000 at Tennants in Leyburn in what is thought to be a new world record.

The toy went under the hammer at  Tennants’ Toys, Models and Collectables Sale on November on  Wednesday.

The lot was a Pre-War Hornby Dublo Clockwork 0-6-2T Southern 2594 Locomotive which sold for £6,000 plus buyer’s premium.

Experts say Southern Railway is a very sought-after category by locomotive collectors and this, together with the excellent condition of train, attracted three determined bidders who battled it out to win this prized example.

Despite not having its original box, the train was accompanied by Southern Railway Open and Goods Wagons and a Brake Van, and original wrap and clockwork key.

Tennants’ Toys, Models & Collectables Specialist Kegan Harrison said” ‘This really is an exceptional price – and we think this must be a new world record.”

Further lots of model locomotives and railwayana also attracted bidders, with a Marklin for Bassett-Lowke O Gauge 4-6-0 Jubilee Class Locomotive selling for £1,600 plus buyer’s premium, an Atlantic Coast Express Locomotive Headboard selling for £1,500, plus premium, and a Brass Header Plaque from Sledmere & Fimber Singnal Box on the Malton and Driffield Junction Railway selling for £850.
