Two men have been arrested after police stopped a van near Catterick Garrison and discovered around 40 large fuel containers and equipment suspected of being linked to fuel theft.

Officers were patrolling the A1(M) at about 11pm yesterday (Thursday, October 1) when they stopped a silver Mercedes Sprinter van.

Checks at the roadside revealed the driver was disqualified from driving until March 2027.

Police said officers also noticed a strong smell of fuel coming from the vehicle.

A search of the van uncovered around 40 large fuel containers in the rear, together with piping and gloves.

Although the containers appeared to be empty, police said there was still a strong smell of fuel inside the vehicle.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified.

Both men in the van were also arrested on suspicion of going equipped to steal.

They were taken into custody for questioning and remained in police custody when the force issued its update.

The van was also seized as part of the investigation.

North Yorkshire Police said: “Our officers are out on mobile patrol around the clock, day and night, across North Yorkshire.

“We can’t be everywhere, but we could be anywhere.”

Enquiries into the incident are continuing.
