Two arrested after Richmond town centre burglaries

Police in Richmond have arrested two men on suspicion of burglary after break-ins at Gilsan Sports and the Co-op.

The Market Place sports shop was targeted at around 1.55am on Wednesday, and the neighbouring Co-op store was broken into at around 4am.

Following police enquiries and searches in response to the incidents, the two suspects were arrested at 5.45am on Queens Road.

The men, aged 45 and 35 and both from Darlington, are being held in custody for questioning.

It is understood bottles of vodka and whiskey were taken from the supermarket.

Police are investigating whether the men visited the Co-op earlier in the day before returning to smash the window and enter the building.

Witnesses or anyone with information about suspicious behaviour in the Market Place on Tuesday night or during the early hour of Wednesday are urged to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room.
