Two Richmondshire post offices have made it through to the region final of the so-called Rural Oscars.

Reeth Post Office and Corner Shop and Barton Village Shop and Post Office are into the last four of the Yorkshire regional final of the Countryside Alliance Awards.

The finalists were nominated by their customers.

More than 17,000 nominations were received in total.

Martin and Susan Cluderay, from Reeth Post Office, said: “We were surprised and flattered to be nominated in the first place and would would like to thank to all our customers who have subsequently supported our nomination.

“After all, without our customers, we wouldn’t have a business.”

Regional winners will be announced in May.

The winners will then be invited to attend the champions reception at the House of Lords in London in June where the national winners will be announced.

Countryside Alliance Awards director Sarah Lee said: “We have been overwhelmed by nominations this
year.

“The secret to the Rural Oscars’ popularity is that they honour the people involved in these businesses and not
just their produce or services.

“They exist to sing the praises of those who work hard to keep our communities and rural economy ticking, but don’t seek the spotlight.

“These awards provide a cause for celebration in a time of great uncertainty in the countryside. Our local produce is second to none and there are many community heroes and businesses worthy of national recognition.”
