Unicorn beat Carperby on day they lift league trophy

On the day they lifted the trophy for the fifth time in six seasons, Unicorn showed why they are Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League champions on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Carperby Rovers.

Carperby had plenty of the play in the first half, keeping the ball well, but Unicorn defended well, limiting the visitors to half-chances.

Sam Lambert came closest to carving out an opportunity when he closed down on David Mutch in the home goal, but was unable to get the ball onto his right foot quickly enough to get a shot away.

Unicorn had some good breaks of their own, with stand-in keeper Tim Weatherill saving well with his feet from a Liam Reeves effort. I

Carperby again looked bright at the start of the second half, with good strikes from the edge of the area from Michael Dent, then Harry Davis, but on both occasions, Mutch saved well.

With about an hour played, Unicorn got in front when Reeves swung in a corner for Owen Kelly to head home.

The home side then showed their class with two quick goals. Firstly, Luke Hamilton finished into the roof of the net when the ball was laid off to him on the edge of the area, before Carl Handley headed in an inswinging corner from the opposite side to the opener.

The game was a fairly even contest for the remainder of the game, but with Carperby unable to get a foothold.

Elsewhere, Richmond Town Academy beat Reeth 3-1.

Fin Tulip pinched the ball off the keeper and set up James Connelly to give Academy the lead after just nine minutes.

Reeth levelled before the break after Tom Morgan slotted home after a freekick into the box.

Substitute Jacob Dunn slotted home after an inch-perfect pass from Jamie Diamon to give Academy the lead, before the points were secured when Jake Banks came off the bench to beat the keeper.

In the remaining game, Hawes beat local rivals Askrigg by 5-1.

Hawes took advantage of a depleted Askrigg with Tom Calvert scoring a brace. Luke Wilkinson, Daniel Richardson and Ashley Iveson also netted.
