Unicorn beat Hawes on penalties to progress in Dales Cup

Unicorn progressed to the second round of the Dales Cup with a win on penalties over Hawes on Saturday.

Brandon Acton netted after ten minutes from a Ryan Alderson corner to put the Wensleydale team into the lead.

But the celebration was barely over when Unicorn 0veteran Gary Nicholson scored from another corner to equalise.

A third goal from a corner then saw Unicorn take the lead through Tom Sweeney.

After the break Brandon Acton pulled Hawes level with a goal from yet another corner, Ryan Alderson providing the delivery.

Carl Handley netted for Unicorn, who played the second half with ten men after suffering an injury and having no subs, on 75 minutes, but Jordan Iveson levelled for Hawes soon after.

Hawes battled hard to break down the ten men but the spirited Unicorn team held firm and went on to win on penalties.

Back in the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League, Reeth just lost out to Catterick Garrison, losing 3-2.

Reeth were 1-0 up at the break through a Steven Bainbridge goal.

Catterick Garrison scored three in the second half without reply, with an improving Reeth’s Curtis Blake-Russell scoring a late consolation goal.

Elsewhere, Richmond Town Reserves enjoyed a comfortable afternoon, beating Spennithorne 6-0.

Tom Gilroy got a hat-trick, while Harry Needham, Harry Beresford and Danny Weatherill also got on the scoresheet.
