Unicorn beat Hawes to stay on course for league title

Unicorn remain favourites for the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League title after a narrow 2-1 win away at Hawes on Saturday.

But they have their keeper David Mutch to thank for pulling off two late saves to secure the points.

Carl Handley put Unicorn ahead with a header on 37 minutes.

Ryan Alderson pulled Hawes level after the break with a smart finish, but Liam Reeves scored with 15 minutes to go before Mutch’s heroics.

Elsewhere in the league, Carperby enjoyed a good win over Catterick Garrison.

Having lost games from being in front too often this season, the Wensleydale actually turned a result the other way having been 1-0 down at half time thanks to a well taken free kick from Craig Teasdale.

Carperby started the second half slowly and could of been made to pay when Catterick got a controversial penalty but Pickard saved with his legs from Teasdale.

Carperby equalised when Sam Lambert got in behind and squared for Matty Bradley to finish.

Bradley then returned the favour for the winner when he played in Lambert who rounded the keeper before finishing.

Lambert was unlucky not to add to his tally, but Carperby were delighted to get the win.

In the second round of the Dales Cup, Richmond Town Reserves travelled to Spennithorne having beat them 6-0 in a league game the previous week.

In what turned out to be a much closer affair Richmond took an eleventh minute lead when Harry Beresford found Ed Lewington and his cross sailed over the keepers head into the net.

Town had the better of a scrappy first half but couldn’t find the second goal which allowed Spennithorne to equalise on the stroke of half time through Kalem Stanger.

Town secure their place in the next round when when Lewington crossed to the back post and Beresford volleyed home to continue his rich scoring vein.

Richmond Mavericks are also through after being given the win by Reeth.
