Unicorn close gap after Catterick draw with Hawes

League leaders Catterick Garrison had to be content with a single point against Hawes on Saturday.

In a game that was switched to the garrison due to a waterlogged pitch in Wensleydale, Hawes arrived with an under-strength side and were soon under pressure.

They took the lead however when Catterick stopper Mark Birnie had a moment to forget when he punched a corner into his own net.

Three minutes later the game was level when Jaime Hunt calmly converted his penalty after Matty Leaf was hauled down in the area.

The second half continued to be one sided with Catterick well on top.

Second half substitute Stephen Fleming saw a potential hat-trick of good chances go high and wide, before the home side had two penalty shouts turned down.

Catterick felt Matty Leaf had been clattered from behind for the first. The second saw a Hawes boot connect with Stephen Fleming’s shin pad, but again no penalty was given.

Despite their dominance, Catterick felt afterwards that they did not deserve the win, with the patched up Hawes outfit digging in impressively to earn a share of the points.

Unicorn did their title hopes a world of good win a narrow 2-1 win over Carperby.

Liam Reeves opened the scoring after just eight minutes before Tom Barley equalised for the Wensleydale team after half an hour.

Unicorn were soon back in front however when youngster Bailey Proudlock got his ninth of the season with a goal that turned out to be the winner.

Richmond Mavericks stayed in touch with the league leaders with a dominant 7-1 win over Reeth.

Substitute Joe Carruthers got two, while Owen Kelly, Callum Durkin, Ian Miller, and Jack and Harry Laviolette got the others.

Ben Smith got Reeth’s goal.

Spennithorne ended a run of defeats with a 5-1 thumping of Askrigg.
