Unicorn will go into the Christmas break with a six-point lead at the top of the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League.

But the gap could have been greater had they not been held to a 1-1 draw by Richmond Town Academy on Saturday.

Liam Reeves put Unicorn ahead with a long-range effort, only for Oliver Wright to equalise in the second half.

Academy had chances to take all three points but found David Mutch in the Unicorn goal in fine form.

Carperby narrowed the gap at the top with a 7-1 win away at Reeth.

The Wensleydale side got in front when Jimmy Spence’s through ball was controlled by Michael Dent who rounded the keeper to score.

Sam Lambert grabbed another before Dent headed home his second.

Lambert got his second after the break thanks to another assist from Spence.

Four soon turned into five when James Metcalfe played the ball through for Dent to complete his hat-trick.

Nathan Howard grabbed a goal for Reeth before Carperby netted again through Dent and Metcalfe.

Elsewhere, Askrigg moved off the bottom of the table with a 5-3 win over struggling Spennithorne, while Hawes overpowered Leyburn to win 4-1.

A minute’s silence preceded all games on Saturday following the sad passing of long-serving Catterick Garrison Football Centre goalkeeper Tim Bishop.
