Unicorn finish league season unbeaten

Three competitive games took place on Saturday in the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League despite the title already being decided.

The 2025/26 winners, Unicorn, completed their league season unbeaten with a 5-3 win away at Hawes.

Liam Reeves opened the scoring for the visitors after just two minutes, before James Stanger equalised with a finish at the back post for Hawes.

A long throw was flicked on for Reeves to nod in to give Unicorn the lead, before Ethan Brown finished from close range after good work from Luke McCormack to give the Richmond side a two-goal cushion.

McCormack soon made it 4-1 with a shot that tricked past the keeper.

Hawes threatened when a looping effort beat Unicorn keeper David Mutch, but Paul Brown produced a superb goal-line clearance.

Just before the break, Reeves completed his hat-trick in style, hammering a first-time trivela into the bottom corner after Brown’s lay-off to make it 5-1 at half-time.

The second half was a little quieter but still full of chances. Hawes pulled one back through Luke Wilkinson on 56 minutes.

Unicorn thought they had a sixth when Gus Glass crossed onto the goal line, only for McCormack to head it away with the back of his head.

Mutch produced a sharp save to deny Wilkinson, with Hawes adding a late third with the final kick through Jordan Iveson.

Carperby eventually came out on top in the local derby against Askrigg, but were made to work hard for the points, as the home side battled impressively throughout.

Carperby started on top but the balls through were finding home keeper Miles Middleton.

Coen Pickard-Sparne came closest to scoring when he turned his man and ran through, but Middleton saved twice. Ben Metcalfe also came close from outside the area, and a couple of efforts sneaked past the post from Harry Davis and Owen Pratt.

Askrigg had a decent chance of their own, as they looked to break forward with purpose on a number of occasions.

The second half was much the same, with Carperby controlling the midfield, but Askrigg limiting their chances to balls through and shots from outside the area. Middleton saved from Eidur Pickard-Sparne and Michael Dent, while Davis hit the side netting on the volley.

Askrigg thought they’d got in front but the ref blew for offside.

Carperby finally took the lead when James Metcalfe struck from outside the area and a deflection sent Middleton the wrong way. The away team made sure of the points after a good one-two between Dent and Aidan Simpson, with Dent slotting it home for 2-0.

Elsewhere, Leyburn played out an enerttaining game against Richmond Town Academy, plenty of goals, handbags and some contentious reffing decisions.

Leyburn took an early lead when Riley Girgan netted from a long throw, before Fin Tulip found the top corner from a free-kick 25 yards out.

Harry Saunders continued his fine form in front of goal to give Leyburn the lead again, before Girgen netted his second following a mistake by the keeper.

Just before half-time, Sam Taylor scored a fourth for Leyburn.

Accademy were much improved after the break and James Connelly scored a diving header to reduce the deficit.

Connelly then netted from the spot after the Richmond side was given a penalty following a clumsy challenge in the box.

Academy continued to press but were unable to find an equaliser.
