Unicorn move back to top after win over Richmond Town Academy

Unicorn taking advantage of rivals Hawes having a day off to move back to the top of the Scotts for Storage Wensleydale League on Saturday.

The Newbiggin pub side beat Richmond Town Academy 6-1 despite the Unicorn’s management team admitting it was hardly a vintage performance.

A Liam Reeves free-kick and a goal from Ethan Brown, after a through ball from Tom Sweeney, gave the home side an early lead, before Town pulled a goal back.

Unicorn were much-improved in the second half, with Reeves getting a second soon after the re-start.

Two assists from Tom Keegan, first setting up Brown and then setting up Bailey Proudlock, handed Unicorn the advantage.

The sixth and final goal of the day was probably the best, with second half substitute Shayne Ketley making an instant impact.

He collected the ball off Proudlock and whipped the ball into the top bin moments after coming on.

Carperby will have been disappointed to draw 2-2 at home to an ever-improving Reeth.

A goal in each half from Tom Barley gave the Wensleydale team a two-goal cushion going in the last quarter, but efforts from Brandon Wright and Jack Procter, who netted deep into injury time, mean the points were shared.

Further down the table, Catterick and Leyburn played out a feisty 4-4 draw.

Leyburn took a 3-0 lead into the break thanks to two from Riley Girgan and one from Aidan Leahy.

Catterick had the better of the second half, however, with Alex Boyle netting soon after the restart and Leyburn stopper Jack Davison being called on to save another penalty.

Late goals from Stephen Fleming, Jake Oakes and another from Boyle gave Catterick a 4-3 lead with the final whistle approaching, however, Leyburn new boy Billy Skelton scored with seconds remaining to level.

Elsewhere, Spennithorne continued their fine form with a 10-2 demolition of bottom side Askrigg.

George Shaw was the pick of the forwards, scoring five. Other goals came from Tom Partridge, Sam Lane, Jake Gamble-Schofield and Steven Richards.

Jack Dalton and George Cockerill netted for Askrigg.
