Unusual Cross Country Golf Challenge held at Richmond Golf Club

Karen Jobling who scored the hole-in-one!

Richmond Golf Club hosted an unusual competition – a Cross Country Golf Challenge — on Friday.

Instead of the usual format of starting on the first tee and finishing on the 18th green, players were challenged to mix and match the holes – for example, teeing off from the 14th tee and aiming for the 9th green.

The quirky “golf course with a difference” attracted more than 60 players on a fine summer evening, with some remarkable scores returned.

The winners were:

  • Ladies: 1st – Karen Jobling & Vicky Matthers; 2nd – Andrea Offord & Mel Albrighton; 3rd – Sue Kipling & Barbara Gregory

  • Gents: 1st – Jake King & Tom Thurgood; 2nd – Dan Morris & Tom Keegan; 3rd – Connor Smith & Alex Ayers

  • Mixed: 1st – Claire Bateman & Lee Coward; 2nd – Penny Holroyd & John Simpson; 3rd – Mary Pettit & Brook Watson (the two club captains)

There was also a standout moment when Karen Jobling scored a hole-in-one playing from the fifth tee to the 18th green.

Captains Mary Pettit and Brook Watson said it had been “a great night for the club”, congratulating the winners and thanking everyone who took part. They also gave special thanks to Martin Dolan for arranging the course and starting the players off.
