Residents showed their respect as community leader John Blackie made one last tour of his beloved Upper Dales today.

Young and old stood solemnly as the hearse passed on its way to the councillor’s funeral at St Mary and St John’s Church at Hardraw.

The route took in much of Cllr Blackie’s Upper Dales district council ward, with the procession starting in Richmond where district council staff at Mercury House left their offices as the councillor passed by.

The procession then made its way up Swaledale, over the Buttertubs and through Hawes, with residents coming out of their homes to show their respect.

Two Little White Buses — a service which the councillor started in 2011 — escorted the hearse.

The procession also went past the Dalehead Garage, in Hawes, a service how owned and run by the community thanks to Cllr Blackie’s efforts.

A celebration of Cllr Blackie’s life will be held at 1.30pm on Friday, September 27 at St Margaret’s Church in Hawes.
