A motorist had to be cut free by firefighters after a crash on the A1(M) this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the northbound carriageway near Barton just after 6am on Saturday morning.

The collision involved a van and a HGV.

The male driver of the van was trapped in his vehicle by his legs.

A spokesperson for Richmond Fire Station said: “It was a difficult extrication taking near 90 minutes.

“Due to the position and type of the vehicles, we had to essentially dig our way in.

“But the casualty had minimal injuries and once we had the space we transferred him to our friends in the ambulance service.”
