Firefighters from three services were called to a vehicle fire on the A1 near Scotch Corner after the flames spread to a nearby hedge and fence.
The incident happened on the northbound carriageway at about 1.55pm.
Crews from Richmond and Ripon attended, along with an appliance from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the vehicle fire had spread to a hedge and fence alongside the motorway.
Firefighters tackled the vehicle using a hose reel jet and dry powder extinguisher.
A further crew positioned itself away from the motorway to tackle the fire which had spread to the hedge.
The flames were extinguished and the incident was left in the hands of police and highways officials.
