Veteran’s cafe to be held monthly in Richmond

Veterans visiting Catterick Garrison.

A new café support group for veterans is to open monthly at Richmondshire Cricket Club from Tuesday, July 23.

The Veteran’s Café, which will run between 10am and 12pm, will cater for the needs of older veterans and provide a place for them to socialise with other ex-service men and women.

Run by Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington’s Ex-Forces Support team, the Richmond cafe follows on from the successful cafés that are currently running in Darlington, Skipton and Northallerton.

The cafe, which will initially run monthly with scope for further dates to be added in future, will be an opportunity for veterans to enjoy camaraderie over tea, coffee and refreshments, with bar games such as pool and darts also on offer.

Providing peer support and an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed and informal setting.

Veteran’s cafés also give the opportunity for organised trips out to local attractions and museums, and talks from guest speakers.

Veterans will also be able to access relevant and up to date information from Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington’s Ex-Forces Veteran’s Support team.

For veterans who are isolated or who need some extra support, there are also opportunities available to use the telephone befriending service provided by Ex-Forces Support.

A volunteer will be matched to the individual based on mutual interests and experiences who will call them to check that they are OK and offer support, signposting and guidance.
