A video has emerged of a senior councillor attempting a police impairment test after a collision.

Conservative district councillor Campbell Dawson was arrested after a pedestrian was hurt in an incident at the weekend.

The Richmondshire councillor, who represents Croft and Middleton Tyas, was detained following the collision in St Cuthberts Green, Barton, at 8.50pm on Sunday.

The pedestrian, a 50-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.

Police initially said they arrested an 80-year-old on suspicion of drink driving, but have clarified the statement saying a motorist was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

A video of Cllr Dawson apparently attempting the police impairment test has emerged.

The clip shows the community leader try several times to walk along a white line in the centre of the road as two officers watch.

A photo of the councillor in the back of a police van has also emerged.

Cllr Dawson, from Newton Morrell, has served on Richmondshire District Council since 1991.

He is a former chair of the authority and serves on several council committees, including the audit, governance and standards committee.

A Richmondshire District Council spokesperson said the incident happened in the councillor’s personal time, not while he was on council business.

“Richmondshire District Council will await the outcome of any police investigation before making any further comment.”

Leaders of the Conservative group on the district council have declined to comment about the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.

To do so dial 101, press one and pass information onto the control room, quoting reference number 12200160840.

  1. Think you have failed to mention he is an 80 year old man who has arthritis and knee replacements and so like many people his age he is unable to walk in a straight line. He also passed his breath test. There is always more than one side to every story.
