Village pub and restaurant announces closure

The Swan in Gilling West.

A Richmondshire pub and restaurant has announced it is to close.

The Swan in Gilling West will shut from Monday, with the owners Dean and Vic Hodgson saying they are shutting to spend time on projects which are “more fulfilling and more rewarding”.

The announcement comes on the same day that the landlords of the George and Dragon in Hudswell announced they were were walking away from their tenancy due to an increase in costs.

The owners of the Gilling pub have thanked customers and staff for their support.

They said: “We want to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you who has been a part of our story and part of our journey, and it sure has been a journey.

“Your loyalty, enthusiasm and passion for what we do have fuelled us every step of the way over years.

“We’ve laughed, learned, and shared countless experiences together, and for that, we are truly grateful.”

They added: “While this chapter is coming to a close, we believe that every ending is a new beginning.

“Our journey will continue. We are closing the doors to The Swan while we spend time together as a family and work on other projects that are more fulfilling and more rewarding.

“You only get one road trip and we want to dedicate this part of our journey to our beautiful daughters, focusing on what’s important to us as a family.

“We will carry the lessons, love and memories with us as we move forward on new adventures.”

The announcement follows a spate of business closures for the Richmond area with The Fleece, Ravensworth Nurseries, York House gift shop and Cross View Team Room all announcing they have already shut or will do this year.
