Village pub reopens after departure of tenant

A community-owned pub has reopened after the departure of the previous tenant.

The Travellers Rest in Skeeby is back open today.

Skeeby Community Pub Society (SCPS), which owns the pub, said yesterday that the venue would close for a short time ahead of its reopening by a temporary tenant.

It then announced it was reopening today.

The SCPS said in a statement: “We’re pleased to say the closure of our pub has been very short.

“The Travellers Rest will be open for business again from today under the new Tenancy at Will agreed with Ali Bell and Chris Soley.

“Previous SCPS committee members, Chris and Ali are joined by their wives Cerian and Jen and will look to carry on providing home cooked meals, a wide range of drinks and a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

“Karen and her team have been an asset to the pub since it opened and we are thrilled that they will continue to run the pub with the existing team and work closely with the new tenants to bring an exciting future to The Travellers Rest.”

The pub had been run by local businessman Chris Wallace, who also runs Richmond Brewing Company, since its reopening in May after the premises was bought by the community.

However, the SCPS said yesterday that the tenant has not been able to meet the terms of the lease despite board members “working tirelessly alongside the tenant to try and overcome various issues”.
