Visitors are being urged to take care and act responsibly in the Yorkshire Dales National Park ahead of a predicted busy weekend, with police and partner agencies warning of ongoing issues linked to high visitor numbers.
Concerns have been raised by residents about inconsiderate and sometimes dangerous parking, congestion on rural roads, and vehicles blocking access routes, including those needed by emergency services. Authorities say such behaviour can cause serious safety risks, not just inconvenience, particularly where narrow roads become impassable.
In response, coordinated patrols are being carried out involving officers from North Yorkshire Police alongside PCSOs, public safety officers, park rangers and parking enforcement teams. The aim is to provide a visible presence in key locations, deter unsafe behaviour, and respond quickly to issues as they arise.
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Paul Crabtree said the pressure from large visitor numbers in the south Dales is having a direct impact on local communities, with blocked access routes in some cases preventing emergency vehicles from getting through. He warned that enforcement action will be taken where necessary, but stressed the importance of visitors parking responsibly and respecting rural communities.
Safety concerns have also been highlighted around water. Lead Public Safety Officer Alice Michelmore-Brown warned that rivers in the area can be extremely dangerous even in warm weather, citing risks such as cold water shock, strong currents and hidden hazards.
Authorities are encouraging visitors to plan ahead, use designated parking areas, avoid blocking roads and entrances, and take extra care near rivers and open water. Anyone witnessing unsafe or illegal behaviour is being asked to report it to police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
The appeal comes as the Yorkshire Dales National Park is expected to see increased visitor numbers, placing further pressure on infrastructure and local services over the weekend.
