A voucher scheme to boost the fortunes of businesses in and around Hawes has been launched by a local hotel manager.
Jake Dinsdale, managing director of Simonstone Hall country house hotel just outside the market town of Hawes, says traders are this year having a tough time.
“Hawes is one of the most remote towns in the country, with one of the most vibrant selection of independent businesses, but there’s a huge push to online sales an so many restrictions on shopping locally,” he says.
Because many small business owners don’t have the capacity for online sales, he says, the simple voucher scheme, GIFT Hawes, will help shoppers and traders alike. The vouchers for varying amounts can be redeemed at any one of the participating businesses.
“Hopefully this will lead to revenue for all, but allows small businesses to access online marketing and wider business community support, while giving locals the opportunity to shop and support, without risk,” says Jake.
Already a number of local businesses have signed up, and several holiday cottage owners have committed to buying the vouchers for their guests as welcome packs. They would also be an excellent gift for staff who live locally, he adds.
“The push to shop away from our closed local businesses is palpable, but not accessible to the most vulnerable in our community, many of whom cannot leave home to go shopping.
“We hope the scheme will help us tretain our vibrant market place and fundamentally support local businesses, owners, workers and suppliers, for the benefit of all.”
