Walker rescued after falling off bridge while taking photo

A walker was airlifted to hospital after he fall off a bridge while taking a photograph today.

The 69-year-old man was walking from Keld to Muker in Swaledale when he fell off a small footbridge in Swinnergill.

The man fell about two metres, sustaining injuries to his chest, head and arm.

Volunteers from Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team (SMRT) attended the incident.

SMRT controller Steve Clough said: “As luck would have it, two passers by happened to be off duty NHS employees and they provided excellent initial first aid and also managed to get him onto the footpath.

“Both Yorkshire and Great North Air Ambulances attended and provided further medical care.”

Once the casualty was stable, SMRT volunteers placed him on stretcher and hauled him up a steep slope to the waiting Yorkshire Air Ambulance.”

Steve added: “This was a great piece of joint working with members of the public, air ambulance’s and mountain rescue all working effectively together.

“We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.”
