Police have warned about scammers claiming to be from British Gas targeting residents in the Richmond area.
A number of households have received emails and calls from people purporting to be from the energy company.
The email says that the receiver is due a refund and to follow the link to your account.
However, a police spokesperson she emails were fake.
“This is not how British Gas operate.
“British Gas provide guidance on their website about spotting fake communications and you can notify the company of a scam by emailing phishing@centrica.com.”
Police say they have also received reports of scammers claiming to be from Amazon.
The recorded message tells the customer to renew their Amazon Prime account by pressing a particular key for the subscription to be paid.
The spokesperson said: “Action Fraud is also warning that it has received numerous reports this months of fake emails supposedly from Amazon.”
Residents can report any fraudulent attempts to Action Fraud on 0300 1232040 and North Yorkshire Police on 101.
