Rishi Sunak joined celebrations in Leyburn as Wensleydale’s women’s rugby team marked a landmark national cup victory.
The Wensleydale Heifers secured a 29–15 win over Cheshunt in the National Junior Plate Final in Coventry, capping an outstanding season that also saw them finish second in their league. The success represents a major milestone for a team formed only in 2020, with rapid progress in just six years of development.
The Richmond and Northallerton MP attended a special event at the club’s Cawkill Park home, where he congratulated players and staff on their achievement. He presented the team with the trophy and joined celebrations both in the clubhouse and on the pitch.
He said: “It’s been great to witness their progress after only six years and it’s a tribute to the players and their coaches for their hard work over the season.”
During his visit, Mr Sunak also officially opened the club’s new balcony viewing area, which overlooks the pitches with Pen Hill providing a backdrop. The addition is the latest enhancement to the clubhouse, following a major extension and refurbishment completed in 2019, alongside continued investment in playing surfaces and facilities.
He added: “Wensleydale RUFC is now a great place to both play and watch rugby. It’s good to see success both on and off the pitch.”
Club chair Chris Taylor praised the MP’s continued support, presenting him with a life member’s shirt in recognition of his long-standing backing of the club.
“Rishi has always backed Wensleydale RUFC and we appreciate his support over many years as we have endeavoured to build the club and involve more people from across the local community,” he said.
He added that the development of the Heifers had been a standout success story, describing the cup win as a moment of real pride for the club and its supporters.
