Wensleydale Heifers go season undefeated to lift league title

Wensleydale Heifers celebrate their league win.

The Wensleydale Heifers ladies’ rugby team are celebrating after winning their league and going the full season undefeated.

The team recorded their last win of the season on April 14, beating Durham 24-5.

They will now be promoted from the NC North (East) division three to two for next season.

This is a huge achievement for the Heifers, who will be moving up from NC (East) 3, into NC 2.

The achievement is all the more impressive as the Heifers were playing in a league which includes teams from towns such as Hartlepool and Durham.

Two players, Mary Stones and Steph Bradley, have been selected for the final 35-player training squad for Yorkshire.

The women are the only players from the third tier to be selected in the final 35.

Izzy Lundberg, from the team, said: “The number of supporters who come and watch the Heifers is brilliant and makes the energy on the field all the more electrifying.

“It’s incredibly moving to see the way our women’s rugby team engenders such a strong sense of community within the surrounding dales, who love and appreciate the team so dearly.”

The team was only formed in 2021, with the majority of players being beginners to the sport.

Izzy added: “Through great coaching, teamwork and tenacity, they have continuously improved, and this is evident through their fantastic results. For this reason, they are such a great team to join, whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced player, the Heifers cater for all.

“Furthermore, they are such an empowering group of women, who always take care of each other on and off the pitch.

“Rugby is one of the most inclusive sports, as no matter whether you think you are too big, too small, too young or too old, there will always be a role for you on the pitch; every player is valued.”

Currently, members of the Heifers’ squad range from 18 to 46 years old, and they are always looking for new players to join from aged 17+ no matter their level of experience.

The team trains at Cawkill Park,  Leyburn, on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6.30pm to 8pm.
