Leyburn junior golfer Nate Doherty has capped an impressive season by finishing runner-up in a national final and earning a place on the Yorkshire County development pathway.

Nate finished second in the Ping Junior Golf Tour Grand Final at Ping’s headquarters in Lincolnshire after qualifying as one of just ten young golfers to compete in the event.

He produced another strong performance on finals day, completing his round at one over par to finish just two shots behind the winner, who ended on one under.

The result rounded off an excellent season on the Ping Junior Golf Tour, with Nate having previously secured his second tour victory at Ramside Hall.

His performances have now been followed by further recognition closer to home after he was invited to take part in the Yorkshire County Under-13 Identification Day.

The event brought together 24 of the county’s most promising young golfers, who were competing for places within the Yorkshire County Development Squad.

Following the selection process, Nate has now received confirmation of his call-up to the county pathway.

The achievement provides another opportunity for the Wensleydale youngster to develop his game alongside some of Yorkshire’s leading junior players.

Yorkshire’s county system has a strong record of helping talented young golfers progress through the sport.

Major championship winners Danny Willett and Matt Fitzpatrick are among the golfers to have emerged from Yorkshire’s junior ranks before going on to represent England and establish successful professional careers.

Nate will now be hoping his county selection is another step forward as he looks to build on a season which has seen him compete successfully against some of the best young golfers in the country.

His second-place finish at the Ping Grand Final followed a season-long Order of Merit competition through which the ten finalists secured their places.

With a national runner-up finish, a second tour victory and now recognition from Yorkshire County, Nate ends the season with plenty to build on as he continues his development in the game.
