Wensleydale put 13 tries past relegated Halifax

Wensleydale’s final league game of the season was away at relegated Halifax and what a way to finish the clubs first season in Yorkshire 3 scoring 13 tries in an 84 – 7 victory.

After a cautious start centre Jack Reynard opened up the Halifax defence to score twice followed by a 70 yard individual effort from scrum half Paul Smith.

The forwards then joined in the scoring when Tom Lawson sent Tom Mundy in for his first of the season.

Number 8 Bodge Burnett and captain Will Allman both crashed over from short range. Smithy again broke away only to be caught by the cover who took him out with a high tackle resulting in a penalty try.

Reynard nipped through for his hat-trick on half-time notching up Dales half century in the process.

The second half took awhile to get going until winger James Ashford sprinted clear for his first of the day.

Reynard was sent through for his fourth when Wes Patterson turned the defence with a lovely step and line straighten.

Not to outdone Ashford ran in four tries for the third time this season during an extraordinary spell completing  a memorable day for the travelling supporters. Final score 84 – 7.

Dale’s form over the last couple of months has been fantastic, quite how relegation threatened takes some believing.

The Unicorns also travelled on the Fosters bus playing out a 28 all draw against Cleckheaton 4ths.

Tries for Jamie Elliott, Jonny Riley, Henry Hewitson and Jake Taylor with Jonny converting all four.

This after going 15 points down early on.

In the juniors Wenselydale U16s showed what talent there is waiting to come through, drawing 26-26 with Middlesbrough – a team that has dominated when the clubs have met in recent years.
