Almost 90 walkers and runners took to the countryside around Leyburn at the weekend to raise more than £1,400 for local charities and good causes.

Wensleydale Rotary held its third Wensleydale September Saunter, with participants offered a choice of two routes starting and finishing in Leyburn.

The main route covered 13.6 miles, while a shorter 5.7-mile option was available for those wanting a less demanding challenge.

Organisers said 89 people took part on the day.

Early rain cleared before the start, with participants enjoying dry conditions and sunny spells, although organisers said it remained a little windy.

While the September Saunter is not a race, some participants chose to run the routes.

Neil Bowmer was the first man to finish, completing his route in one hour and two minutes, while Ruth Waterston was the first woman home in two hours and 12 minutes.

The event was based at Wensleydale School in Leyburn, where participants were able to enjoy refreshments after completing their walk or run.

Wensleydale Rotary president Richard Pennell thanked the volunteers and supporters who helped make the event possible.

He said: “We were able to use the main hall at Wensleydale School which provides a great base to run the event from.

“As last year, our members and friends provided a wonderful spread of sandwiches and cakes that were much appreciated, along with tea and coffee.

“We would like to thank the RAYNET volunteers who manned the radio communications in the school and at the checkpoints, and all the Rotarians and friends who helped, either in the school or on the course.”

The event raised more than £1,400, which will be used to support local charities and good causes.
