Two students from Wensleydale School have returned from a cultural exchange trip to China, after representing the school overseas and building lasting international friendships.
Seren, in Year 9, and Katie, in Year 8, travelled last month alongside staff member Josh Hadfield as part of a wider group from six UK schools. The visit forms part of an ongoing partnership programme linking schools in the UK and China.
During the trip, the group visited Beijing, Qinhuangdao and Baoding, taking part in a packed itinerary of cultural experiences and school exchanges.
Highlights included a visit to the Great Wall of China, as well as time spent in several Chinese schools where the students joined lessons and met their peers. They also explored famous landmarks such as the Temple of Heaven, Yonghe Temple and Jingshan Park.
Katie described the experience as “amazing”, adding that she had made new friendships she still keeps in touch with. She said visiting Yonghe Temple was a particular highlight, offering a deeper insight into Chinese culture.
Beyond sightseeing, the students were immersed in everyday life, including being welcomed into local homes to cook dumplings and share meals with host families.
Mr Hadfield praised the students for their attitude throughout the trip. He said: “They were curious and respectful throughout, and a real credit to Wensleydale.”
He added that opportunities like this help broaden students’ understanding beyond the classroom, giving them valuable life experiences and cultural awareness.
The school has thanked organisers including the Hebei International School Partnership and the Hebei Provincial Association for UNESCO, and hopes to host Chinese students in return later this year.
