Wins for Catterick Garrison and Unicorn mean it’s tight at the top

Wins for Catterick Garrison and Unicorn meant both teams went level on points with league leaders Richmond Mavericks on Saturday.

With Mavs’ game against Richmond Town Reserves postponed, several teams took advantage with Leyburn and Colburn also now within sniffing distance of last year’s title winners.

Unicorn conceded an early sloppy goal scored by Danny Weatherill in their game against Richmond Town Reserves.

But a quick Liam Reeves brace put them ahead, before a Dale Middleton throw-in was expertly flicked on by Handley perfectly into the path of Tom Keegan, who was on hand to send a powerful half volley into the top bin to make it 3-1.

It was 4-1 before half time when a Reeves back heel through ball caught most people by surprise.

But Keegan anticipated it well and burst through the back line, before cheekily dinking Cunningham in the Town goal.

Middleton then made it 5-1 with a scrappy back post toe poke after a Reeves corner and a Handley effort was blocked on the line.

Academy got a late consolation through Weatherill, who later missed the chance to seal his hat-trick, skying one from on the goal line.

Colburn emerged as comfortable winners of their league game against Carperby.

They were 7-1 ahead by half-time, thanks to thee goals from Brandon Bishop, and a goal apiece for Tom Sweeney, Scott Chandler, Craig Teasdale and Rory Wallace, with one in reply from Carperby’s Paul Stephenson, a wicked deflection leaving Colburn’s keeper, Kenny Nicol, completely helpless.

The procession continued unabated in the second half, with Bishop getting a fourth, Shane Parkinson helping himself to a hat-trick, and sub Dan Gardner grabbing one.

Carperby kept at it and claimed three second half-goals of their own, through Jack Jones, John Pickard and Adam Spence.

Richmond Buck suffered yet another narrow defeat in an evenly contested game against Leyburn in which they felt that the rub of the green was against them.

They started well but only had themselves to blame when they fell behind on 20 minutes after Josh Wooff was caught on the ball in his own box from a goal kick and Leyburn had a gift of an opener through Kalem Stanger.

Buck were level five minutes later after a good ball from full back James Donaldson found winger Micheal Ingram who played a one-two with Marshal Thorogood.

Ingram’s centre into the box found David Addison who, with his back to goal held off his tight defender, swivelled and found the finish to send the ball into the net for 1-1.

This became the half time score as Leyburn weathered a storm of pressure after one of their players was sin binned for ten minutes shortly after the equaliser.

In this spell of Buck dominance Thorogood made the Leyburn keeper make a close range save which then fell nicely for Addison, but with the goal gaping he could only rattle the cross bar.

The second half saw both teams creating chances, with Ken Williams staring for the buck to repel numerous Leyburn surges forward.

Leyburn produced a touch of class when Kalem Stanger found the top corner from outside the box for 2-1.

A series of attempts in the Leyburn box resulted in Thorogood grabbing a deserved goal for 2-2 with his low and hard shot from ten yards out.

However it was Leyburn who took the points with 15 minutes to go when a ball over the top sent forward Lee Davison free of the last defender, who took the ball into the box and smashed it home.

Buck were left to question the validity of the goal and how luck had deserted them after what they considered to be one of their best performances of the season so far.

Elsewhere, Catterick Garrison scored four in the first half in their game away at Hawes before having a man sent off.

The two goals from Neil Wright, and one each from Lian Walker and Luke McCormack were enough to give the visitors all three points.
