Wins for Wensleydale League leaders ensures title race remains open

Wins for Richmond Mavericks and Unicorn on Saturday in the Scotts4Storage Wensleydale League ensured the title race remains wide open.

There were also wins for two teams in the chasing pack, with Hawes and Richmond Town Reserves both keeping up their good form.

Mavs were made to work hard for their three points, narrowly beating Spennithorne and Harmby 3-2.

Chris Metcalfe scored for Spenni and James Kelly for Mavs after around 20 minutes.

Damon Reaks gave the Wensleydale team the lead soon after the break, before Sam Pickersgill equalised for Mavs and veteran Wayne Gredziak scored the winner with 20 minutes to go.

Unicorn also came through a tough fixture, winning 1-0 at home to Carperby.

Unicorn started the better side, with Connor Dagnall giving them the lead when he got too much space on the left and cut inside his man to finish high into the roof of the net.

The second half was constant pressure from Carperby but Uniform used all their experience to keep the visitors from scoring with veteran defender Nigel Cole marshalling the back four, and David Mutch looking unflappable in goal.

Carperby’s best effort came from Tim Weatherill who picked the ball up on the left before beating four players and striking the ball just wide from the edge of the area.

Sam Lambert nearly equalised at the death but his shot hit the side netting when he’d got beyond the last man.

Hawes had a more comfortable afternoon, beating Catterick Garrison 5-1.

Two goals apiece for Jordan Iveson and Luke Wilkinson did the damage for Hawes. Stephen Moffitt scored the fifth, while Stephen Fleming scored consolation for the garrison team.

Elsewhere, Richmond Town Reserves put nine passed Reeth without reply.

Ross Gladman and Brandon Bishop both got hat-tricks.
