Women’s football team launches in Wensleydale

A new football team has highlighted the growth in the women’s game.

Leyburn Ladies was launched last year with just five players.

It now has a squad of more than 16 and has joined a recreational league.

The team  also recently hosted a seven-a-side tournament at the Wensleydale School for teams from across the region.

Leyburn Utd membership secretary, Liz Whitehead, who launched the team, said: “The team was set up as a pathway for the girls and to grow the club. A lot of clubs are now expanding with the inclusion of a women’s team and we are proud at how quick ours has grown.

“I’d like to thank all the players for their help and support in getting the team off the ground.

Liz added: “We now have a qualified coach, Jim Fox, who has helped improve the skills and development really quickly.”

The team also has the backing of local sponsors, Cleanwise, Aysgarth Garage and the Black Swan in Leyburn.

The club is looking for more players.
