Spanish stage race’s director Javier Guillén was a guest of Welcome to Yorkshire for the opening stage of the Tour de Yorkshire on Thursday.
Sir Gary, speaking at the start of the Tour de Yorkshire’s third stage in Richmond on Saturday, confirmed talks were underway over the possibility of hosting the start of La Vuelta in Yorkshire.
He said: “We would love to start the Vuelta here, it’s kind of Spanish weather isn’t it.
“It would work really well, we’ve got a great relationship with Javier Guillén who’s the director of the Vuelta who will ultimately make the choice as to the routes and the starts and we will continue those discussions – but I think it would be wonderful if one day the grand tour of Spain could start in Yorkshire.
“I think it’s very realistic, the time from is down to Javier not me.”
