A young drummer has proved he has got the beat by finishing third in his first competition.

Kieren Pounder, 13, from Little Crakehall, came third in the solo drumming category at the Solo Piping and Drumming Contest at Ampleforth College earlier this month.

The event featured 85 performances with pipe bands including the North East England Cadet Pipes and Drums, City of Newcastle, Sedbergh School Pipe Band, Beverley and District and Manchester Phoenix taking part.

This story continues after the adverts:

Kieren is a member of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Pipe Band.

The band performs at events across North Yorkshire.

Kieren started playing at the age of 5.

He said: “We do gigs all over and in 2015 we did a charity concert with Aled Jones to raise money for injured firemen and women.

“We are like a big family with plenty of laughs. The competition is something I always wanted to do and I hope to do another competition next year playing along side to pipers.”

The band is always looking for more pipers and drummers, and offers free tuition.
