Young Leyburn golfer to compete at world championships

A young Leyburn golfer will compete at the Champion of Champions World Championships next week — and has already booked his place for next year’s contest.

Nine-year-old Nate Doherty will take part in the prestigious event at Lough Erne Golf Resort in Northern Ireland.

The course, designed by six-time major winner Nick Faldo, was once home to Rory McIlroy as its touring professional before he made his move to the USA.

He will tee off alongside young talents from Sweden, Germany, and South Africa.

Among the field is also last year’s world champion from the USA, who returns to defend his title.

And Nate has already qualified for next year’s world championships after his recent victory in the national Ping Junior Golf Tour, when he finished with an impressive score of even par.

The event attracted a strong field of competitors, including players fresh from the European Championships.

Nate’s parents, Scott and Sarah, have launched a GoFundMe page to help them cover the costs of travel, equipment and other expenses.
